E-Governance - Models and Benefits

 E-Governance is the application of information technology and communication in the government processes to achieve secure and reliable information lifecycle management. Life cycle of the information involves various processes as capturing, preserving, manipulating and delivering information. One of the main objectives of E-Governance is to promote citizen participation in the decision-making process and making government more accountable, transparent and effective.It is convenient and cost-effective for businesses, and the public benefits by getting easy access to the most current information available without having to spend time, energy and money to get it.




The term E-Governance leads to many other diffused neologisms as mentioned below


E-administration- This is the term used for implementation of the Information Technology and Communication in the administrative departments held with the government. This has the objective of utilizing the infinite capabilities of Information technologies to extend reach of government administration to last citizen.


E-services- This is the term used for providing all the government managed services online. Once all the services are posted online and citizen start using these services using internet then its is going to narrow down the differences generated due to religion, region and many other factors responsible for dividing the society deeply.


E-democracy- Through the internet, people from all over the country can interact with politicians and make their voices heard by their representatives. Online blogs, forums, communities and interactive surveys will help representatives to analyze the common mindset of the populace. There can be chat rooms which will facilitate direct communication between citizen and political leaders. Examples could include online disclosure policies, online grievance redress forums and e-referendums.


The primary delivery models of e-Government can be divided into four models as Government-to-Citizen or Government-to-Consumer (G2C),Government-to-Business (G2B),Government-to-Government G2G),Government-to-Employees (G2E).


E-Governance if often considered as a government using internet facilities to provide improved services and better accessibility of public services. But concept of E-Governance is little less understood by limiting it to internet as there are many non-Internet based E- Governance models which can be used in this context.


For instance some of the non-Internet forms may involve


I. Telephone, fax, PDA, SMS text messaging, MMS,


II. Wireless networks and services, Bluetooth, CCTV, tracking systems, RFID,


III. Road traffic management and regulatory enforcement,


IV. Identity cards, smart cards Polling station technology TV and radio-based delivery of government services.


E-Government will be a powerful tool to help all types of economies (developed, developing and in transition) to bring the benefits of the emerging global information society to the largest possible part of their respective populations.
